The competition stage for the 17th RegioStars awards of the European Commission for 2023 has begun. Each year, RegioStars awards the best projects funded through the cohesion policy.
Beneficiaries for all projects funded through the cohesion policy may submit applications to compete in the following five categories connected with the policy objectives of programming period 2021-2027:
- A Competitive and smart Europe
- Promotion of competitiveness, innovation and economic resilience
- A Green Europe
- The green transition as a driver of regional growth
- A Connected Europe
- Strengthening mobility and connectivity between regions
- A social and inclusive Europe
- Towards a Europe without discrimination, which makes the most of regional talent
- A Europe closer to the citizens
- Promotion of sustainable development for all territories
Applications may be submitted through 31 May 2024.

Completed projects that received funding through the European Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund, the European Social Fund, the Just Transition Fund or as part of any section of Interreg programmes starting after 1 January 2014 are eligible to participate in the competition.
An independent committee of academics will select up to 5 finalists per category. The finalists will then go on to compete in a Final Round during the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels. The award ceremony will also be held during that week in Brussels.
Since 2008, the REGIOSTARS competition has awarded projects funded through the cohesion policy for their excellence and innovative approaches to regional development.
Last year’s competition was the most expansive to date, with 228 applications. This year’s goal is to surpass them.
